Background on BONP
Nestled between a major highway and limestone and concrete industries lies an unlikely peaceful oasis. Bulverde Oaks Nature Preserve, gifted in 2010, is owned and managed by Green Spaces Alliance. This 31-acre patchwork of nature is a sanctuary for local wildlife and native plants. It sits over the Artesian Zone of the Edwards Aquifer and drains directly into the Recharge Zone, and more than 50% of the parcel is within the 100-yr floodplain.
Historically, this land was used for ranching, but the pressure to develop the land has increased with surrounding urban sprawl. Bulverde Oaks Nature Preserve has been spared some of the pressure because of its location on the floodplain. Now owned and managed by Green Spaces Alliance, those pressures have been almost eliminated, and the undeveloped island of nature can continue to thrive.
In a city that likely will grow to 3 million residents by 2040, Green Spaces Alliance is shaping Bulverde Oaks Nature Preserve to be a sanctuary for the citizens of San Antonio, as well. We believe it is vital to humanity’s well-being to have natural spaces for playing, learning, connecting to our natural environment, and finding refuge from the busy world of everyday city life.
Events (First Saturday Hikes and PYW Workshops)
At the moment Bulverde Oaks Nature Preserve is only open to the public by appointment. Everyone is welcome to join a guided nature hike on the first Saturday of each month, led by Master Naturalists, or hike on their own with our self-led options. See Upcoming Events in the sidebar to sign up for tours.
Picture Your World Weekend Workshops are held twice a month for children looking to explore and photograph the preserve.
Volunteer groups are helping to create walking trails throughout the diverse natural landscape. Educational opportunities abound. Picnic areas and benches will soon give visitors a place to rest, renew, and behold the scenic landscapes and the wonders of nature around them.
